MESSAGE
FROM THE PRESIDENT (not "W" but our very own Cliff):
This is a
report on meeting with Dana Point YC regarding Nationals. But before
that, the date has changed for the Nationals. This
was done to accommodate several S-35 owners who wished to compete in the
PHRF championships, which were on the Aug. 11-12 weekend. Some of
the top S-35's will compete in the PH Champs and therefore show the flag
which is a positive for the class. The members wishing to do both,
now, do not have to choose.
Present were
DPYC Commodore Jack Taylor, DPYC Race Chair Sue Senescu, husband Barry,
John Turpin, and myself. This was a get acquainted meeting, and its
purpose was to introduce, and loosely budget, the major events that will
take place at the Nationals. The fleet will provide $2000 for
expenses, plus entries, surplus of which is to be returned to fleet.
I
had a chance to look at the facility. It is a very nice clubhouse with a
huge meeting room, plenty large enough to seat 180-200 people. The bar
upstairs will easily meet our drinking requirements. The food is
catered, and I believe they will put a dinner package together for about
$15 or less. Outside where the boats will be, they will be able to
accommodate 12-15 boats in the same place. Because of Harbor police
rules, rafting beyond three boats is not allowed.
Some
discussion was held concerning the race course, and I'll get into that
with a later memo.
Bottom
Line: Very nice people, and they want to do a bang up job. It looks like
it will be fun.
Ed.
Note: Our very own Charles Kuralt goes "on the road",
Cliff reports that "I will be motorhoming to the Colorado River
starting Sunday and be gone for a week. If there are any big-bad issues,
send them to Dick Schmidt."
IMPORTANT
NOTICE TO CLASS OWNERS:
Where
did you send your DH Applications and Membership Forms??? In an
unfortunate bit of timing, Pete Johnstone headed out of town for a
month, so your forms may be piling up in his mailbox! If you do
not see your DH applicants posted on the website yet, please forward
them to Cliff and myself by email asap so they don't get left out!
Also, the 2001 forms are posted on the website in the Class Management
section. These forms replace the old ones that were sent
out in early January by Pete. Thank you.
Last reminder
to get out next weekend for Midwinters. We are hoping for a 10
boat class in MdR, so come join us!

NEWS
FROM THE S-35 BOARD:
The
first meeting of the 2001 Board led by Cliff Thompson took place at BYC
on 23 January 2001.
The following board members were
in attendance: (Name/Fleet/Boat)
Nick Ellis/Newport/Magic, Dennis
Case/San Diego/Wings, Jeremy
Davidson/Long Beach/Whiplash,
Jeff Janov/MDR/Ripple, Dick Schmidt/MDR/Outlier. Also attending
were Tom Schock/Builder, Pete Johnstone/Newport/Whistler
(Treasurer) and Mike Pinckney/Newport/Mischief.
Trophies:
The first subject was
trophies. Over the past several years, two of our top trophies have been
lost. Last year the trophies were replaced by the class. We were also
pleased to find out from Tom Schock about a National Championship trophy
at NHYC, which he believes belongs to the class. This trophy was not the
missing National Championship trophy.
Therefore, we now have the
following trophies:
National Championship trophy
- location - Mischief
National Championship trophy
- location - NHYC
PCC Championship trophy -
location - Wings
Jimmy Morris - location -
Wings
Marketing:
The next subject was how to market
our class in 2001. There was much discussion on how to do this. We just
need to advertise the class more.
It was decided to advertise with about 6 ads a year in Santana.
Schock and the class to split the cost, which will be about $800.
Builder's
Report: Tom
Schock reported that they are building a
new Schock 35. The
one currently under construction is going to Texas. The cost for a new
boat is now about $130,000. Tom also mentioned that the boats need to
hold their value better.
Other
Ideas: The
point was made that the class needs to keep the current members as well
as recruiting new members. A questionnaire will be sent to owners
getting feedback.
Need to stay in contact with
ALL owners, not just the ones racing.
Need to send out more
newsletters, as a way to let people know what we are doing.
Need to set up a crew sign up
on the web page, as other classes have done.
Need to clean up the rules,
which seem confusing.
The winners need to tell us
how the win was accomplished on the water.
Need to go back to clinics.
Rules:
The
remainder of the meeting was completing the task of the by-laws/rules
rewrite. This was accomplished and the S-35 2001 By-Laws/Rules are
available. A special thanks to Dave Voss, who modernized the rules, and
made them a lot easier to read. Thanks Dave.
NEW
ON THE WEBSITE:
Well,
almost everything is new on the website! There is a
2001 Class President's
Message, 2001
Preseason Odds have been posted,
the new revised Class Rules and Crew Information Form are there for
downloading, and the MdR
Fleet has already had four races this year.
Web
Info: Our website is
more popular than I thought. We now get reports on how many of you
are visiting the site (in amazing detail). Apparently, you all
like to surf the web during work hours as the 11 am hour on weekdays in
the most popular time to visit. On an average weekday, 59 people
check out the site generating 463 "hits". In the month
since we started getting this info, our biggest day was 863
"hits". Anyway, I always wondered if anyone read this
stuff, and now I feel a little better!
Important: The
proposed Designated Helmsmen for 2001 which have been received are now
posted on the website in the "Class Management" section.
Please review them and pass on any information you may have to any
member of the Board. All board member's email links are also in
that section.
WELCOME
"GLADIATOR":
Hello Dave.
Could
you please include me in the S 35 schedule for 2001 season. I am
chartering the old Firecracker for the duration of 2001. The Team/Boat's
name will be "Gladiator". Sincerely,
Marc Skipwith
Ed.
Note: Skip is well known for his fleet building efforts in the MdR
Star Fleet, and we are glad to have him join us. Previously he has
sailed as a tactician in the fleet...and has already made his presence
felt currently standing second in the MdR Fleet Championship after four
races.
MIDWINTERS REMINDER:
If
you are wondering where to find the biggest S-35 fleet for Midwinters,
come to Marina del Rey!

Members Dick Schmidt, John Turpin, Cliff Thompson and Dave Voss, Class
Treasurer Pete Johnstone, Incoming 2001 Area Reps Jeff Janov, Jeremy

LAKE ERIE
SCHOCK 35 UPDATE:
Dave
- some info for your next newsletter...The final standings for the
Cleveland Sailing Association "Boat of the Year"
are in and the Schock 35's did very well representing the fleet.
SNOOKER (S35) was Second Overall
(out of 30 PHRF boats), and STATE OF SCHOCK (S35)
was third. SNOOKER also took 1st in Class for PHRF A Boat of the
Year, with STATE OF SCHOCK taking
Second in Class. After 14 of 15 races, the 1st, 2nd
and 3rd place positions for Boat of the year were still up for
contention. This made for a
great final 2-race regatta at Grand River Sailing Club,
Grand River OH.
In the 14th race the winds died and
backed, which left both SNOOKER and STATE
OF SCHOCK fighting each other tack for tack for second place. After
CARTEL, (eventual winner of BOTY) got lucky with a wind-line on
their side of the course,
SNOOKER and SoS went head to head battling for 2nd. SoS beat
SNOOKER, but both boats ended up 31st and 32nd for the day
overall! The weekend standings
clearly didn't matter as much as the summer long series so
we were excited about our position...On the 15th and final race
for BOTY honors, SNOOKER and SoS
were like two Americas Cup boats match racing within
a fleet of 40 boats! It was the most exciting race anyone on the
two crews has ever been in. The
course was a triangle, windward leeward, windward
leeward. With 8 marks to round, the lead between the two boats
changed hands 11 times! Each
boat was performing at their peak for the season and battled
up and down the course. On the final leg, SNOOKER rounded the
leeward mark just ahead of SoS,
but had some problems during the rounding. The boats
were nearly equal in speed all day, and this proved true for the
final beat to windward. At the
first crossing of the leg, SNOOKER was ahead by 3
seconds and the boats nearly collided on the crossing! SNOOKER
and SoS split up for the last
beat to the committee boat in a last dash effort for SoS to
get ahead of SNOOKER. SNOOKER ended up finishing ahead by less
than 15 seconds when a strong
bender helped them 10 degrees and make the pin...
The SoS crew was upset to lose the race, but excited about the
way the summer and race played
out. We had a lot to be happy about this year.
Taking
3rd overall and 2nd in-class isn't too shabby for a program that
purchased the boat in March and
assembled its crew quickly and was on the water by
April 15th practicing (most boats weren't even in the water yet
since the spring can be chilly
here in Cleveland! [without the 5 series throw outs
allowed an tallied in the BOTY standings, SoS was the low point
winner of the series...We felt a
little like Gore winning the popular vote, but
loosing the election...Oh well, it makes for a fun series..!]
We were also thankful for the
competition and newfound friendship with the
crew and owners of SNOOKER. If you're going to loose, you might
as well do it fighting to the
end with great competition. The SNOOKER program has
worked hard for the last several years to achieve this years
success.
A special note to:
--x-FEVER crew: Bill O'Dell, Mike
McNamara and Jim Mackey (CSA BOTY boat/crew
in 1998 and 1999!) for joining SoS to help kick start our program
this year. They "kept the faith" when dealing with a
'bad-news-bears' crew we've
assembled... Without them we couldn't have performed and had such a
great year like we did.
--Rich Wilber, proprietor of Sobstad
Sails Midwest. Within 8 weeks he and his
staff designed and constructed 3 new sails for SoS! Record turnaround
during a summer that saw a lot of business for sail-makers.
Without them we couldn't have
performed and had such a great year like we did.
--Al and Brant Russell Father and
Son leaders of SNOOKER for a great series.
P.S. - Joe and I are off to Key West
Race Week on January 15th with Brant from
SNOOKER and a rag-tag crew to try our hand at a Henderson 30 named
PURPLE HAZE.
