All the Schock 35 News Fit to Print - Turkey Day Edition 2000

Hi, Dave...Are you OK?  Are you in litigation?  All this time has gone by with no new site info...I'm getting the shakes - J. Janov

Dear Jeff:  Thanks for your concern.  Although the boat is hibernating for the winter and the skis have already had their first powder run,  things are happening in the class to report upon.  In addition to the items in this e-mail, over the next several weeks I will be updating and reorganizing our website.  The Board has asked that we consolidate the two websites making it easier for you to do one-stop shopping for all your S-35 info needs.  I will also be fixing those technical problems that have been brought to my attention.  I look forward to seeing all of you during the new year and trust that you all enjoyed the turkey and gravy and reflected on the lives we are blessed with on this first Thanksgiving of the new millennium.  ...sorry about the delay Jeff, hope you enjoy this fix! - Dave

NEWS FROM THE S-35 BOARD:
Our first meeting post Nationals took place at BYC on 14 Nov. with Board Members Dick Schmidt, John Turpin, Cliff Thompson and Dave Voss, Class Treasurer Pete Johnstone, Incoming 2001 Area Reps Jeff Janov, Jeremy Davidson and Dennis Case and Owner Ty Hokanson all in attendance.  (Thanks to Pete for the food & drink.)  With lots to cover, we all got home at about 11pm.  Next meeting will be on 12 Dec. also at BYC at 6:30 pm.
Fleet Officers/Board for 2001: In addition to the three new area reps mentioned above, Nick Ellis of Magic will represent the Newport Fleet.  Dick becomes Past President and Pete has graciously agreed to extend his tenure as Class Treasurer.  However, although several people were nominated to be the 2001 Class Pres., no one has yet been selected.  If you have suggestions or nominations, please forward them to either Dick or myself by e-mail.
Class Finances:  Sound fiscal management has left us with over $2000 in the bank again to start the new year which represents a reasonable amount to handle the cash flow needs of the class.  We actually saw a small increase year over year in the year end balance.
New Class Owners Handbook/Roster:  Although our class rules call for official communications to the class to be made electronically, the Board fleet it was a great idea to send out new Class Handbook/Rosters in hard copy along with sail stickers to those owners sending in their class dues this year -- obviously this will be an added incentive for you to get those dues in early this year!!  Many thanks in advance to Cliff Thompson, who has already started the arduous chore of assembling and printing.  Please note that these will be distributed to owners only and are to be used only for personal use - not for commercial mailings of any kind!
Rules Changes:  The Board agreed that all boats with names starting with the letter "P" be permitted to start one minute in advance of the starting signal without penalty.  Oh, so you are actually reading these e-mails?!  Just kidding.  We again placed emphasis on making any changes available to the class as soon as possible in advance of the season.  A significant number of minor issues have been forwarded to the Rules Committee for its review prior to our next Board meeting.  As an editorial opinion, I don't see anything major in the issues being examined, only minor tweaking to close perceived loopholes...OK, if I can't have a head start, maybe all boats starting with gold pin striping start one minute late...all in favor say Aye...
Class Championship Schedule for 2001:  Ah, the part you're really looking for...well, here it is.  (Note, scoring system remains the same as last year, low point, one throw out):
    W.D. Schock Regatta -- March 3&4, NHYC
Ahmanson Cup -- April 21&22, NHYC
Newport to Ensenada -- April 27, NOSA
Yachting Cup -- May 5&6, SDYC
California Race Week -- June 2&3, CYC
S-35 Pacific Coast Championship (Boatscape.com/North Sails Race Week???) -- June 22-24, Golison
The obvious changes are a return to our traditional circuit which is designed to facilitate the delivery of boats.  Ensenada goes from Class Sponsored to Championship status and replaces Santa Barbara to KH as the lone distance event.  After an experiment with an early season start at the SD NOOD, we return to our traditional appearance at the Yachting Cup.  Also, California YC has moved Cal Race Week off of the Memorial Day weekend to the following weekend which should make both deliveries and attendance easier.
Class Sponsored Events for 2001:
    Midwinters -- February 17&18, SCYA
Leukemia Cup -- May 5, SDYC
Thompson Regatta -- May 12, SDYC
Lipton Cup -- May 19&20, SDYC
Nationals for 2001:  Big news here.  With the Newport Fleet hosting the event in 2001, Dana Point Yacht Club has been selected to host Nationals on August 10-12.  DPYC has previously hosted other major National one-design events, including the J-35's and promises to roll out the red carpet for the class.  Their facilities are fantastic and include the ability to have all the boats located on one long dock similar to the dock side party we had at the old LAYC at Nationals in '92.  Special course will be set taking the racing away from the influence of the point.  The Board was very enthusiastic about the effort made by DPYC to request to be the host for 2001 and for taking the class to a new location.
Website:  Everyone agreed that the best coverage we have ever had was after the SB to KH race when so many racers wrote in with their summaries of the experience.  I strongly encourage you to submit articles, race coverage, or whatever, to make the site more interesting than it is when written from only one perspective!  Thanks in advance for your help!

Dear Dave:  We just sold Shillelagh to Charlie Cavallino from San Diego. He was a cruiser, then started a family, and now is ready to get back into sailing (racing eventually). Really a nice guy. I will send you his e-mail address later so you can add him to your list of owners. Please don't take our name off your list because I still want to know what is going on in the Schock family.

We now have a Harbor 20, "Shamrock VI" that we bought used from a guy in Coronado Cays. We are having a blast with it and Dick can handle it fine.

Diane O'Brien

SAVE THE DATE! Just letting you know that, by popular demand, Cal Race Week has been moved off the Memorial Day Weekend, and the new dates are June 2-3, 2001. We look forward to having a strong turnout from the Schock 35 fleet again this year for another great regatta. More information on this event and the Inshore Championships will be coming out later.

Santa Barbara to King Harbor:

Reminder - to enter without penalty fees, your entry must be received by July 27 - this Thursday! The entry forms and related information are on the website. Don't forget to sign the Safety Certificate (now posted) as well as the entry form.

From the WD Schock Corp.:

The WD Schock Corp. is happy to welcome Tony Smythe, from Higgins & Smythe Yachts, to our growing family of dealers. To kick off the partnership, Tony has purchased a new Schock 35, which will be delivered to the Houston Boatshow being held October 5th - 9th, 2000. Tony’s Schock 35 will sport the newly designed 2000 interior layout and the new deck design of an open transom! The new interior will include: Fabric headliner, teak on the interior cabin sides, varnished teak and holly sole, teak dining table, custom removable "V" berth, and teak battens in main salon.

Tony is looking forward to racing his new 35 on Galveston Bay and will be competing on level 70 racing. And of course we all hope to develop a new Schock 35 fleet in Houston! If you would like to contact Tony you may reach him at the following:  Higgins & Smythe Yachts, Watergate Yachting Center, 1500 Marina Bay Dr. Ste 1460, Clear Lake Shores, TX 77565 281-334-7533

News from the Lake Erie Fleet:

This past weekend was Cleveland Race Week at Edgewater Yacht Club and we had 5 Schock's racing, including ourselves: State of Schock, Snooker, Adrenalin, Fever, and Schock Therapy (It was great to have the competition!) I believe there may also be two other boats out of Sandusky that did not compete in this event, but are actively racing on Lake Erie in their own club events. - Joe Sbrocco/Nico Cottone, "State of Schock"

MDR to San Diego Race:

White Fang was 1st in Class A, 4th overall in PHRF in this race which was held on July 1, sponsored by SMWYC and SWYC. Don Adams missed the trophy winning trip, but Doug Felberg/Ben Guevara and their friends, including Mark Van Gessel took the boat to victory. White Fang's regular helmsman, Rick Palmer sailed the Martin 242, Hard Habit, and was first in class (C) and 1st overall in PHRF and the first SMWYC boat to finish. White Fang corrected out over the new Pendragon, Christine, a Schock 40. and 2 1D35's, among others. There were 12 boats in Class A and AA, starting together (a windward course off the starting line at S mark to J mark and then South.) There were another 14 boats in Classes B and C (the racing classes) plus another 26 or so boats in the cruising classes.

Congratulations:

To Piranha crewman Marty Atwell on his marriage to April Tarpley on July 13.  On a beautiful evening in Newport Harbor, the ceremony was on a large yacht hired for the occasion.  As the Newport Beach Thursday night sailboat racers sailed around us, ironically it was one of our own Schock 35's -- Water Moccasin -- that was heard yelling up as vows were about to be exchanged "Don't do it!"

2d Congratulations:

To Jeff Janov, owner of Ripple, on the arrival of his first child - a baby boy. I had to assure Jeff that he's so far ahead in the MdR Sunset Series in our class that it was OK to skip a few races - seems there are some other priorities for him around the house this week!

WEBSITE RECOMMENDATION OF THE WEEK:

"This new section of Sailing World's website brings you the latest articles and opinions on professionalism. We hope this page will become a resource for sailors interested in the latest US SAILING and class rules, procedures and eligibility decisions. Please have a look around, feel free to send us your fleet or class's eligibility rules, and stay tuned for further developments."  Interestingly, you'll also find there the very well written article by 2000 Class President Dick Schmidt - "A Case Study of Successful Class Management by Owners, for Owners" published in Sailing World in August 1996.

SANTA BARBARA TO KING HARBOR UPDATE:

*****  I have posted the Entry Form and Brochure for the race on the website for printing and information.  Please note that there are special rules for this race regarding crew minimums, helmsmen and safety equipment.  Curiously, there is currently no information regarding the race on either of the two yacht club's websites.

Would like you to put in a good word for the Leukemia Cup Charity Regatta on July 29 out of SMWYC with CYC and DRYC part of the participants. If we can get 5 Schocks entered we can establish a class, otherwise into PHRF. I call this a FUN race and trying to get friends and whomever on my boat. Being a fund raiser for the Leukemia Society, they will allow +1 second a mile on your rating for every $100 raised by a boat (limited to 100 seconds). Please notify the Fleet. I appealed to Susan also, and I know we have races on July 22 and Aug 4, but as I said this is a Fun event and not to be taken as "serious" racing. -- Don Adams

LETTERS:

Dave:

Some time ago someone had a roller furler for a Schock 35 for sale. Any idea who that was?

Horst (ADROIT)  HLechler@aol.com

Dave,

Captain Blood successfully clawed and chewed their way to a Third Overall in the Chicago Nood with winds of 16-25 Knots on Friday and Saturday. Sunday was calm 5-10 Knots leaving the Frers 38's and Express 37's with a bunch of quick Schock 35's to reckon with. Captain Blood scored Second Overall in the 1999 Chicago Nood characterized by light winds for the three days.

SANTA BARBARA TO KING HARBOR UPDATE:

It keeps getting better!  We now have 15 boats confirmed racing in the Santa Barbara to King Harbor race on Friday, August 4 and three more possible!   This will be one of the biggest (if not the biggest) one-design start in distance racing in Southern California ever.  (I'd be curious if anyone remembers a bigger OD start in Ensenada, SB to KH or MdR to SD).

CLASS TRIVIA QUIZ -- ANSWERS:

Ray Beckett is the winner with 15 out of 17 right (missed on Momentum and Desert Hawk).   Ty Hokanson is the only person to get Desert Hawk is Piranha (I) and Steve Schupak from the factory is the only person who got the name of Hull #1.   Steve wrote: "I think I've got an answer for the trivia question on the name of Hull #1. I believe it's Christopher Robin. Now you may be asking yourself how is it that Tom's [Schock] son in law knows it and not Tom him self. Well the best man from my wedding is neighbors with him and he sailed on the boat back when it was first splashed."

Aftershock =  Ripple     Psychobetty = O'Betty   Phantom II = Stratagem    Buttercup = Menace   Bold Forbes = Troublemaker    Firecracker = Absolute   Odin = Piranha (II)   Momentum = Bold Forbes   Fabuliz III = Outlier   Hombre = Wings   Main Squeeze = Cyclone Malone   Wild Thing =  Katmandu  SBOC3 = Pinnacle   Desert Hawk = Piranha (I)   Menace = Wild Thing   Pinnacle = Twister   Cyclone Malone = Magic

SANTA BARBARA TO KING HARBOR UPDATE:

It keeps getting better!  We now have 15 boats confirmed racing in the Santa Barbara to King Harbor race on Friday, August 4.  This will be one of the biggest (if not the biggest) one-design start in distance racing in Southern California ever.  (I'd be curious if anyone remembers a bigger OD start in Ensenada, SB to KH or MdR to SD).

YET ANOTHER BOAT JOINS THE CLASS:

Congratulations! and welcome to the Class to Tom Parker, new owner in "Restless" (aka Alakazam).  As Alakazam, the boat was active on the class circuit until about two years ago.  Restless will be joining us in the Santa Barbara to King Harbor race representing host club SBYC.  Following right on the heels of Alice Leahey's purchase of Ricochet, it's great to see the class continue to grow!  I received the following from Tom:

Dave,

Glad to see such an active class association. I bought out one of the partners on Alakazam after watching our club spend $15,000 to lease a Schock for Lipton Cup. I still have a Soverel 33 that I am now going to sell. I'm learning to make the Schock competitive at the current class level a lot of work will need to be done. I had a J35 for 5 years and was please to find the Schock is probably a better boat for Santa Barbara than the J. I anticipate that to get the Schock ready will take most of the year. I hope to enter in the King Harbor race and am prepared to be humbled. Looking forward to meeting everyone in August.

Tom Parker

ANYONE INTERESTED IN OXNARD YACHTING CUP?

From Mark Hinrichs:  "The old Strategem boat is considering doing the Oxnard Yachting Cup (at PCYC) the weekend (7/29-30) before SB>KH. It will break up that nasty delivery from Newport, and should be a good regatta, plus we can beat up on the Oxnard PH boats. Maybe there would be some interest in the rest of the fleet for that?"  (Ed.Note - could make for a good circuit event to get the fleet to SB in future years!)

CLASS TRIVIA QUIZ:

So far, Ray Beckett leads all contestants with 15 out of 17 right (missed on Momentum and Desert Hawk).  No one (not even Tom Schock) has gotten the name of Hull #1.  Hint:  It currently sits on a mooring in Newport Harbor.

All of the boats named below are racing in the Southern California fleet today under different names and raced in Southern California before.  Who can correctly identify the current names of the following boats.  1 point per match, 5 bonus points if you can name Hull #1.

Aftershock = ____________  Psychobetty = ____________  Phantom II = ____________  Buttercup = ____________  Bold Forbes = ____________  Firecracker = ____________  Odin = ____________  Momentum = ____________  Fabuliz III = ____________  Hombre = ____________  Main Squeeze = ____________  Wild Thing = ____________  SBOC3 = ____________  Desert Hawk = ____________  Menace = ____________  Pinnacle = ____________  Cyclone Malone = ____________

NEW TO THE WEBSITE:

I will start reposting these newsletters on the website soon as much of the information in them is not currently duplicated there.

WEBSITE RECOMMENDATION OF THE WEEK:

Check out the Online Yacht Club home page at www.olyc.com  There are many links and information of interest to the racing sailor.  As you might expect, Piranha is a member of this club!

BOATSCAPE.COM/NORTH SAILS RACE WEEK UPDATE

Our Pacific Coast Championship will again be hosted by Golison and Golison. Starting with the traditional "businessman's special" on Friday afternoon, we can look forward to five races in three days.  At the present time, it looks like 15 boats will be racing one-design in class once Wings, Slippery and Absolute get around to sending in their entries!  For the first time in a few years at any regatta, we will not be the biggest class -- that distinction goes to the Olson 30's who have a lot of boats (7) coming from out-of-town for their Nationals that will be racing at this event; some from Seattle and Vancouver.  Next biggest class after us will be our littel brothers the Santana 20's.  This event is really a draw because it is the best racing of the year in Southern California.  My understanding is that there will be more boats racing this year than any year in the history of the Sobstad-Audi-North Sails-Coast Cadillac-Boatscape.com's 15 year history!  I can't wait!

SANTA BARBARA TO KING HARBOR UPDATE:

I am excited about this race!  Right now, we have confirned the following:  Piranha, Absolute, Outlier, Ripple, Ricochet, Whiplash, Minnesota Fast, Magic, Power Play, White Fang, Twister, Slippery When Wet.  We also believe that four more boats plan to race for a total of 16 boats competing in the first distance race to ever be a part of the Season Championship schedule for the class!

Susan Beckett has taken on the unofficial status of event coordinator for our class and has some plans for the raft up in Santa Barbara that sound great.  ...and don't forget the tritip beef dinner before the race and all you can eat shrimp feed after that I've been promising all year.

NEWS AND ENTERTAINMENT:

Ricochet Has New Owner:

No longer rumor, I am happy to congratulate Alice Leahey of California Yacht Club on her purchase of Ricochet.  Apparently there's quite a spirited discussion going on about what to rename the boat.  Alice has been the prime coordinator of the California Race Week for the past two years and apparently liked what she saw in our fleet!  I understand that she plans to do Santa Barbara to King Harbor and Nationals and is starting to put together her crew.  If you've got some sailing skill and are interested, let me know and I'll forward it to Alice.

Thinking about renaming boats...

OK, let's see who's really been around in this fleet.  All of the boats named below are racing in the fleet today under different names.  Who can correctly identify the current names of the following boats.  1 point per match, 5 bonus points if you can name Hull #1.

Aftershock = ____________  Psychobetty = ____________  Phantom II = ____________  Buttercup = ____________  Bold Forbes = ____________  Firecracker = ____________  Odin = ____________  Momentum = ____________  Fabuliz III = ____________  Hombre = ____________  Main Squeeze = ____________  Wild Thing = ____________  SBOC3 = ____________  Desert Hawk = ____________  Menace = ____________  Pinnacle = ____________  Cyclone Malone = ____________

NEW STUFF ON THE WEBSITE:

MdR Fleet Sunset Series 12 Pack - Current standings in the best 12 out of 14 series are now being updated weekly.  Ripple is dominating with a 2-1-1 in the first three races.

GOLISON ENTRY DEADLINE!:

OK, we get three weeks to go do other things than race boats and get refreshed before my favorite event of the year!  This event is our PCC's and the fifth leg of the 2000 Season Championship.  It is also the third and final stop of the Volvo Inshore Championship. Always great wind, always great race management, always great parties -- be there!

"The early entry fee deadline is fast approaching (postmarked May 31 "or very shortly after that for the Schock 35's"). If they want to save money, they need to get their entry in the mail....now."

From Rich Roberts: May 28, 2000 For Immediate Release  GPS WINS A FOGGY DAY AT DEL REY

MARINA DEL REY, Calif. -- As a heavy fog settled over the course during the last race of Cal Race Week Sunday, Kimo Worthington, tactician on the Farr 40 Shadow, raised his arms in an appeal to counterpart Robbie Haines on rival Crocodile Rock and yelled, "Where are we?" In 1997-98 Worthington won the Whitbread Round the World Race with Paul Cayard's team, but sometimes even the world's best sailors don't have the foggiest idea. This time his Global Positioning System (GPS) was broken. Haines said, "We knew where we were. Our GPS was working fine. I told Kimo, 'If you don't affect us, we'll tell you where we are and you can follow us.' " Such was the second and final day for 78 boats on the second stop of the Volvo Inshore Championships series, the Triple Crown of Southern California sailing that will conclude with Boatscape.com/North sails Race Week at Long Beach June 23-25.

The day was as frustrating for the California YC's race committee as it was for the sailors. The maddeningly shifty wind of 5-6 knots was even lighter than Saturday, when it momentarily peaked at 10 knots, but another problem was the fog. A patchy gray curtain fell late in the morning, limiting clear visibility to 50 yards or less and causing delays on the three courses from an hour to an hour and a half until the committee boats were able to see the pin ends of their lines.  Finally, the fog drifted past onto the beach for a race in brilliant sunshine -- and then another bank descended for a curtain call as the RC tried to start the last go-rounds. That's when the GPS games started.

The returning fog was so bad that the Schock 35s were unable to start their fifth race, which was OK with Wings skipper Dennis Case from San Diego.  Wings led the first day but finished seventh in the first race Sunday, which is usually its comeback day.  "The other guys put us in their gunsights," Case said. Boatscape.com/North Sails Race WeekS-35 PACIFIC COAST CHAMPIONSHIP NEWS:

April 18, 2000 For Immediate Release: SAILING NEWS FROM BOATSCAPE.COM / NORTH SAILS RACE WEEK Long Beach, CA June 23 - 25

Golison & Golison / Premiere-Racing www.premiere-racing.com

MAJOR ONE-DESIGN CLASSES LEAD WAY TO LONG BEACH LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Traffic jams at every mark are in store when major one-design classes clash in the 16th Boatscape.com/North Sails Race Week June 23-25.  Racing boat for boat, the hard-charging Schock 35s, Farr 40s, J/120s, Olson 30s, Santana 20s and Melges 24s all promise big fleets, handicaps aside.  The expanded event, produced by the Golison family and their new partner, Premiere Racing, is the last stop of the Volvo Inshore Championships. VIC 2000 is the Triple Crown of Southern California sailing that also includes San Diego's Yachting Cup May 6-7 and Cal Race Week at Marina del Rey, May 27-28.  A boat is automatically entered in VIC 2000 when it enters any of the three regattas. However, each regatta also must be entered separately.

The Schock 35s are perhaps the busiest and most competitive of the inshore classes around Southern California. They will feature Boatscape.com/North Sails Race Week as their Pacific Coast Championships.  "The Golison regatta has since 1987 been the best-run event on our circuit and traditionally attracts a big class turnout," said Dave Voss, the immediate past president of the Schock 35 Association who campaigns Piranha. "Great parties, great racing and a family atmosphere make it well worth the trip."

The Schock 35s follow a circuit of a dozen events encompassing their home ports from San Diego to Marina del Rey. Dennis Case's Wings from San Diego, always a top contender in the class, came from behind on the last leg of the last race to win at North Sails Race Week last year.

Boatscape.com / North Sails Race Week is based at the Seaport Marina Hotel at the Long Beach Marina on the east side of the city. This year organizer Bruce Golison has ambitiously blown the former limit on total entries at 150 and anticipates the event will top 200 in 15 classes.  The addition of separate classes for J/105s, Olson 30s, Santana 20s, 1D35s and ULDB 70s will require three racing circles instead of two, inside and outside the breakwater. The Olson 30s had only four boats last year but will use the event as their national championships, so they requested their own class to accommodate up to 30 boats.

For the ULDB 70s, Race Week 2000 represents their first time at the event. Four or five of the powerful big "sleds" are expected to be on the course.

Race Week also draws the cream of the West Coast big boat handicap fleet.  The fleet is divided into classes based on performance and displacement to create the most competitive racing possible. A dozen or more are expected in the 50-foot +/- class. Several in the 40-foot +/- group are expected from beyond Southern California. Their ratings will be reviewed and adjusted to ensure the continuity of the ratings from area to area.

Race Week's race management, considered by many to be some of the best in the world, will be coordinated on each of the three courses by Mark Golison, Mark Townsend of Alamitos Bay Yacht Club and Mike Segerblom of the U.S. Sailing Center.

Title sponsors Boatscape.com and North Sails will be on shore to enhance the sailors' experience, whether it is to go on-line to a "boater's webpage" or to have a sail repaired. Besides its title sponsors, other leading backers for Boatscape.com / North Sails Race Week are Volvo, Team McLube and Corona Beer.

YACHTING CUP:

Although not a Season Championship Event in 2000, don't forget that Yachting Cup is on May 6 & 7 at San Diego YC.  This event will be sailed in 2000 under the rules as proscribed for the Lipton Cup.  Don't hold me to this, but I believe the biggest differences are 1) Bring all the pro sailors you want  2) Bring all the non-stickered sails you want 3) The crew weight limit is 50 pounds higher (1800)

To avoid a $50 late fee, entries must be received by ten days from today (Friday April 28 by 1700 hours)  Entry forms, schedule of events, notice of race and other info are available at www.sdyc.org/raceinfo/ycindex.htm

LIPTON CUP XXXCV:

Teams are getting prepared for the event to be held on the San Diego South Bay on May 20 & 21.  I am preparing a pre-Lipton Cup article for the website and appreciate any photos, stories, crew lists or other items of interest your club may want included therein.

NEW ON THE WEBSITE:

New items include: News from the Lake Erie Fleet, Ahmanson story and complete 2000 Class Rules and Measurement Certificates.

See you on the water!

Boatscape.com/North Sails Race WeekS-35 PACIFIC COAST CHAMPIONSHIP NEWS:

Bruce Golison writes that "Our race week web page is fully up and loaded with all the event info - entry form, notice of race, docking (the map is not there yet), etc. You can let the class know its ready for prime time - www.premiere-racing.com"  The "Golison" Race Week has since 1987 been the best run event on our circuit and traditionally attracts a big class turnout.  Great parties, great racing and a family atmosphere make it well worth the trip, so plan on coming!

By the way, congratulations to Bruce Golison on buying a new Santana 20!

Ahmanson CupAHMANSON CUP:

Entry Forms Online:  Don't forget that Ahmanson Cup is on April 15 & 16 and that to avoid a $20 late fee, entries must be submitted by one week from today, April 12.  Entries and info are available at http://www.nhyc.org/new_page_3.htm

Reminder - Crew Available:  Dave, I was hoping you could help me. Three crewmembers and I are very interested in participating in the Ahmanson Cup this year. Please let me know what I can do to find a ride for them.  The crewmembers anxious to sail in a fleet of Schock 35's have good depth of experience. Dave Johnson is our foredeck guy. He is very intuitive and agile, an all-around skilled sailor. Jon Wickes comes to us from a strong C-scow background. He is a fine tactician; I keep him close to me, filling in as main trimmer. The Lovely Heather Fraser (fraseh@hsmnet.com) works the pit or trims jib when we don't want to take the big guys off the rail. Two of the past three years I have had the great opportunity to join a crew for the regatta. Two years ago I trimmed jib on Absolute. The year before that, main on Raz-ma-taz. At home I usually drive, but have been known to play on the pointy end as well. We don't expect to find a ride on the same boat, but It would be really great if we could all find a ride for the regatta.

Our Schock 35, Dunluce, hails from Bayfield Wisconsin on Lake Superior. We have been racing for the past 5 years. The boat was previously named Chewbacca and owned by Bill Peterson. Bill introduced me to Dave Ullman as a source of information about tuning the boat, and a great source of sails. (We now have a main, heavy #1 and .6 spin.)

I can be reached at johnmcquillan@uswest.net or 612-824-3782.  Thanks much for your time!  John

All the Schock 35 News Fit to Print for March 17, 2000

Preview: San Diego National Offshore One Design (NOOD)

NOOD 2000 LogoStory and results will be posted Monday night or Tuesday morning when I get back from Ensenada.  In the meantime, hopefully SDYC will be posting results on their website each day.

Great to see all the new blood in the class!   We are again expecting to have more sailors on the water on a Schock 35 than any other class at the event.  Two new boats will be making their debut:  Ken Manzoni of Southwestern YC has chartered Shillelagh for the season and Lipton Cup and Fred Kirschner brings his Katmandu for class racing for the first time.  Katmandu you may remember by its former names Wild Thing and Buttercup...or as Steve Grillon used to call it, the Wonder Boat.  We also see the return of Mike Owens' Hotspur this weekend.  Look for big results from Absolute this weekend...they are sailing with an all-star team including Dawn Andrews (bow-Ripple) Dick Schmidt and Gwen Gordon (Outlier) with Sue on the helm and this group adding to the regular Absolute crew, look out.

The weather forecast says it's gonna be a killer Southern California weekend.  Thanks for your patience.  Dave

The Lipton CupLipton Cup 2000:

Latest news is that Yachting Cup will be sailed inside the South Bay on the Lipton Cup venue.  If you haven't raced here before, you really should come for this reason alone.  No kelp...interesting surroundings...no boring trip to Coronado Roads...flat water...all adds up to a lot of fun.

Also, check out the SDYC Lipton Cup website...pretty interesting history of the event going back to 1904.  Anyone know how to write 97th in Roman numerals?

Cliff Thompson reports that the rumor mill was only partly right...there was a three race challenge to represent SDYC and Super Gnat did win one...but Hotspur won the other two and will defend the title for the club.  Still and all, Gnat is moving pretty fast with top women's sailor Betty Sherman on the helm these days.

If you are racing Lipton Cup this year, I'd appreciate it if you could drop me an email letting me know what your club is up to, what boat you are using and anything else you like to share with me.  Thanks.

MISCELLANEOUS STUFF:

Don't wait to the last minute.  Get you embroidered crew attire from John Smith at One Willow.  John has supported the fleet for years, giving us trophies and other items for rock bottom prices and even giving us some items thrown in.  He does the shirts and hats for a number of the Lipton Cup teams and boats in the class.

CREW NEEDED AND/OR AVAILABLE:

This Weekend - SD NOOD - Crew Needed:

Ken Manzoni of Southwestern YC has chartered Shillelagh for the balance of the season including Lipton Cup.  The charter was just finalized, and he plans to race NOOD this weekend, but he's still a few crew short.  If you're interested, call him or send him email:  858.756.3931(w)  619.246.5443(c)  858.259.7365(fax)  heatnken@postoffice.pacbell.net

MIDWINTERS FOLLOW UP:

I don't have a lot of details (nobody ever sends me stories - please do!), but I noticed on the SCYA website that Schocks took first and second in PHRF at LBYC with Whiplash taking second to a Schock 41!  In San Diego, word is that Super Gnat was first followed by Wings and then a J-35.  I did hear some rumor on this one about Super Gnat winning the right to represent the club for Lipton Cup based on the on-the-water victory and that perhaps the intra-club challenge has been extended to best 2 out of 3.  Interesting.  Full Midwinters results are now hyperlinked on the Regatta Schedule page of the website.

NEW STUFF ON THE WEBSITE:

Schock 35 Links Page:

I recently came across two Schock 35 websites that were a lot of fun.  "Magic" came up for Nationals last year and has a great story about the experience, and there's a funny tale from "Schock Full O' Nuts" based in San Francisco.

Also, the factory finally upgraded their website and now has some good stuff posted for the 35 including streaming video of the tape about the class commissioned by Robert Mooers when he was Class President in 1998.  The video is something like 15 minutes long, and if you haven't seen it before, it's worth watching.  Dick Schmidt and Dennis Case co-star with Tom Schock.

Championship Standings Page:

The Crew MVP's for '99 have been posted.  If you want to add an MVP for '99 for your boat, please let me know and I will add it.  The one's listed were announced at the Nationals dinner banquet (you should have been there - the Wooden Spoon presentation was more than memorable.)

Regatta Results Page:

In addition to a brief story on the W.D. Schock Regatta, there is an interview with Dennis Case from Wings including streaming audio of a portion of the interview.  I will be doing more interview throughout the year with owners, crew and others of interest.

PLAN AHEAD:

Does an all you can eat shrimp feed served outside by the water's edge on a nice warm summer evening sound good right about now?  Well, mark your calendars now because that's what awaits you at King Harbor Yacht Club at the end of the Santa Barbara to King Harbor Race.  2000 will be the first year in which this race is a part of the Schock 35 Season Championship, so plan on some downwind one-design racing through the "Windy Lane" off the Ventura County coast.

See you on the water!

Dave
